The person who I think was a legend is Mahatma Gandhi. He was an Indian lawyer who later became a world-famous political ethicist that led nonviolent protests in order to gain India’s independence from British rule.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1689 in Porbandar, India. His parents were Karachand and Putlibai Gandhi. As a young child, he was an average student who had won some prizes, but he was usually a shy and tongue tied student. He was in and out of school after being married to Kasturbai Gokuldas Kapadia at age 13. At age 18, Gandhi left Porbandar for Bombay (now known as Mumbai) and Bombay for London. He enrolled at the Inns of Court School of Law in hopes of soon establishing a law practice in Bombay, but that failed because he was unable to cross-examine witnesses. In 1893, he went to South Africa after a Muslim merchant said his cousin needed a lawyer. But upon arriving there, he was discriminated against because of the color of his skin and dealt with this for his entire stay in South Africa. After returning to India, Gandhi joined the Indian National Congress and took leadership until 1930, when the Indian National Congress suddenly declared independence. In 1942, tensions escalated as Gandhi and other Congress leaders were thrown into jail. Meanwhile, the Muslim League was fighting for a separate state of Pakistan. In 1947, India and Pakistan both achieved their independence from the British. Then, on January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist when he fired three bullets into Gandhi’s chest.
I think Mahatma Gandhi was a legend because he fought for India’s independence, knowing fully that he could risk his life in the process. He overcame the obstacles to fight for what’s right. That is a legend to me. A person who is famous, but uses their power to make an impact on society.
